Bringing in a Second Opinion

Cognitive Surplus, by Clay Shirky

1.  The book I selected speaks about the average person and what they typically do during their leisure time and how it has changed over the past couple of centuries. In the past where individuals have passed time by drinking beer or gin and watching television programs, the internet has altered things for the modern person. It allows individuals to empower themselves using online social media tools at their fingertips. It has also allowed specialization of specific markets and avenues and a more interconnectedness with people all around the globe. The internet has changed and is continuously changing the way people live their lives on a day to day and minute to minute scale.

2. The book highlights how the internet and social media tools can allow people to always be busy and encompassed in what they want, it gives people the opportunity to stay busy and not dwindle time away as they did in the past. It also allows people to market themselves and be heard and exposes individuals to ideas and concepts that they would not have usually heard had circumstances been how they were in the past. This relates to the course because in essence we are trying to get out ideas heard and supported as entrepreneurs with products that we believe can be successful. Ideas that have common core competencies as the book.

3. If i created an exercise for the course related to the book I selected, it would involves social media. I would have students use their social media accounts and reach out to like minded people with their products and I guarantee that at least 50% of them will be supportive because often times individuals surround themselves with likeminded people.

4. Something that shocked me was the number of how many people watch TV per year and how many hours they spend watching the TV. Think about how many hours someone could have out towards a hobby or passion that they enjoy rather than sitting on the couch watching as much TV as they have. These numbers have probably only gotten worse as well as the network of Television has only expanded in years past.

  1. Hi Mark! I completely agree that the internet is changing our lives around us each day. I like how you related the course to this topic of getting our ideas heard too. Your description of what exercise you would do for this course I think is a really great idea and would work. Your last thought about how much people watch TV too, I thought was very interesting. I have always thought the same about how much time people spend in front of the TV and not doing something such as a hobby! Overall, I think your blog post was great!
