13A Reading Reflection #1
I chose to read the book "Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future" by Ashlee Vance. For the majority of my life I have always been very interesting in the advancement and development of technology in the modern world as well as the future of SpaceX. The first thing that really surprised me was the fact that he moved away from his family by himself when he was younger as Elon Musk was a very talented student. His family resided in South Africa but he moved away to Canada and then later the United States by his lonesome. What I most admired on reading Elon Musk's biography was his ability to dramatically shift the American and worldwide future of space technology and travel. He was able to create the most efficient way to send satellites and launch experiments into the earth orbit and beyond. These advancements could have major implications on space exploration in the future. Something that the author spoke about that I disliked the most in the biography was the fact that he was bullied as a child and young adult for his "nerdy" personality and traits. He did not really encounter failure but the adversity was always apparent. He really become one of the first pioneers to revolutionize space technology and exploration and now holds a chief position in the technological environment.
A major competency I noticed by Elon Musk on behalf of his biography was the fact that he was willing to take risks. He had no problem being different than his peers and it resulted in a cataclysmic development of his technological abilities and knowledge. He designed SpaceX to reflect his own innovative spirit. One aspect of the biography that was confusing to me was Musk's ability to show his mental toughness and overcome difficult situations. Elon Musk found himself In very difficult situations that the vast majority of people have turned back from, this being the difficulty to overcome the multiple failure launches. Many of his goals seemed far stretched and unreachable but his ability to overcome this and not fall into chaos actually confused me.
The first question I would Elon Musk is when does he believe that we will come in contact with an alien species? Elon has stressed on numerous occasions that he believes there is extraterrestrial life out there so it is only a matter of time that we find them with our technological advancements. The second question I would ask him is his reasoning behind the design of the Tesla Truck and if he initially thought that was how the car would be seen by the public. I am actually a fan of the design and could see myself potentially driving it in the future so I would be interested as to see how he would react.
In my personal opinion, I believe that Elon Musk's idea of hard work revolves around really following your dreams and not conforming to society's norms of what one should do. I also believe in this idea of thinking. From a young age, Elon showed that he had no problem being somewhat different from his peers and suffered consequences for it. Regardless, one cannot argue that his career has been anything but a success.

Hey Mark,
ReplyDeleteI loved learning a little more about Elon Musk from you Blog post since I chose to read about a different biography. From what I see in the media, I could tell that Elon Musk is the time of person to constantly take risks, and the biography/your post seems to confirm that belief. It was also cool to learn a little more about his early background and childhood, I had no idea he was from South Africa, having lived in Canada as well.
Great work with this post, keep it up!
Hey Mark, I also chose to read about Elon Musk, and I'm glad I did it was a very interesting book. I really like the question you asked Elon, its something most of us wonder and he seems pretty certain that there are other forms of life out there, and I agree with him. Really liked reading your input on the book, great work.
